Sneak-preview visitors to the Sears Tower's new glass balconies all seem to agree: the first step is the hardest. The balconies are suspended 1,353 feet in the air and jut four feet from the building's 103rd floor Skydeck. Their transparent walls, floor and ceiling leave visitors with the impression they're floating over the city. Margaret Kemp, visiting from California, says "it's like walking on ice," and that her heart was still pounding even after stepping away from the balcony. "The Ledge," as the balconies have been nicknamed, opened to the public on Thursday. One of the buildings owners says it's the "view with the most wow in the world." -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-07-02)

Isaac is no ordinary fitness trainer. He's 9 years old, and already weighs 350 pounds. But the New England Aquarium is hoping Isaac and four other northern fur seals can use their athletic abilities to teach kids about exercising and being healthy. The seals twist, stretch, leap out of the water, run on their flippers, and shoot like missiles under and between the fiberglass rocks. Isaac even stands on his head. Aquarium officials hope this program will help kids see that being active can be really fun. -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-07-01)

Gary Harris knows his daughter can put up quite a fight. They started taking karate lessons together in east Texas when she was in sixth grade. Both of them went on to earn black belts. Now, Leslie is 25, and both she and her father have 2nd degree black belts. Harris recalls a time when he entered a karate tournament, only to find that his daughter was his opponent. He says, of course, his daughter won. -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-30)

Sherriff's deputies in California say a bear with an apparent sweet-tooth is the culprit in a recent home invasion. Sherriff's Sergeant Tom Alsky says the couple arrived home Saturday afternoon and found the bear chowing down. Once the bear left the scene, police did some investigating. They say the bear pushed aside the fruits and vegetables in the couple's refrigerator, and went straight for a two-pound box of chocolate. Deputies said the bear didn't do a lot of damage to the home - he must have just had a big craving for something sweet. -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-29)

FRENCH FRY ART

Each year on the boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey, thousands of French fries are eaten by beachgoers, snatched by seagulls, or tossed in the trash. But once a year, some of those fries become works of art. This week, over 150 people took part in the city's French fry sculpting contest, mashing the fries into oily, high-carbohydrate, masterpieces. Kevin and Tammy Brown were two contestants in the event, and each one had their own idea of how to make the perfect sculpture. Tammy used just the fries and her hands to create a crab, while Kevin used toothpicks to create a French-fry log cabin. Kevin said "just about anyone can work with clay; it takes a real artist to create something beautiful from potatoes". -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-26)

It's cheap, but hot and sticky. Montana high school students Charden Wood and Steven Quade are in the running for a duct tape scholarship. The Flathead High students fashioned their prom outfits from the handyman's best friend. They've advanced to the Top 10 in the contest sponsored by Duck brand duct tape. Charden says it took about a month to create her flamenco dress and Steven's pin-striped suit. But Steven says the downside was the duct tape suit got very warm to wear. The winning couple in the duct tape prom-wear contest wins scholarship money. They get $3,000 each and another 3 grand for their high school. -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-25)

At 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds, Pat Burnell could probably play any kind of ball he wants. But his game is waffle ball. He says when people see his team play, they know waffle ball isn't just for kids. Burnell is a member of the Flyin' Wildebeest, one of 14 teams in Michigan's Kalamazoo Wiffle League. The league started with four friends in a backyard game in 2006. Since then, the KWL has gotten serious, in a playful way. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports the waffle league now has an All-Star game, playoffs, league photographer, and an official website. -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-24)

A South Carolina grandfather has finally taken his first airplane flight. But it was nothing compared to the landing. Ralph Large took off in a small plane, but he landed with a parachute. Jumping out of the plane fulfills a skydiving dream he's had since he was a teenager. The high-flying experience was a part of an early Father's Day gift. Large jumped last weekend along with his daughter and granddaughter. He tells the Herald-Journal that it was "a wonderful feeling." -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-23)

Great-grandmothers Emma Dausman and Judy Conner have won Michigan's Division 2 women's title. They were the oldest competitors at the U.S. Bowling Congress' Women's Bowling Association tournament held near Bay City. The 86-year old Dausman had a personal best 554 series in the tournament.
Louie the Lumberjack is getting a makeover. The 10-foot, 1,000 pound cedar statue has greeted visitors to Flagstaff, Arizona, for decades. But the years haven't been kind to Louie. His face is flattened and his body is rotting from the inside out. Builder Wally Baird is doing Louie's face-lift. He says he'll be using auto body filler. Louie is also getting a bigger ax and a new paint job. When Louie's out of surgery, he'll again be standing outside a Flagstaff restaurant. -- Courtesy HisKids.net (2009-06-19)
